I LOVED half of this book. The chapters that were about the characters before during and after the great war held my interest and I couldn’t wait to get to the next chapter. On the other hand while reading the chapters about Kate, the modern career woman, I was bored and didn’t care about her. You knew from the first chapter about her that everything will turn out fine and there would be a happily ever after.It currently seems to be a vogue in literature for a novel to have a heroine who lives in modern times but who finds an object that connects her to someone who lived in another time in history. Upon finding this object she either has to search for that person’s history or we are told how their lives mirror each other.I really wish the author had decided to just write a historical fiction novel about the characters presented in the diary format. By including greater detail and expanding their life events until their deaths, she could’ve easily turned those chapters into a novel. The way this is written the ‘surprise’ is covered in a few lines and we’re left to think,”oh, so then that was the rest of their lives.” I wanted more. And I think this author could deliver. When she writes another novel that is completely historical fiction instead of now versus then, I’ll be first in line to buy it. This book really has no plot per se. That is to say, the characters just go along with life happening to them. There is no huge twist. What does happen I saw coming.I would have preferred the story just be about the two sisters; switching back and forth between them and their great niece, Kate, eventually caused me to forget who some of the characters were regarding Kate's life. For example someone named Larry is mentioned, who seems to be her friend but I never did figure out where he initially came in or who he was.
